SUBSYSTEM are low tone specialists from the creative underbrush of the Berlin jazz scene. Combining esprit and virtuosity, the two musicians explore the possibilities of baritone saxophone and double bass. The low sounds of the big instruments are rarely heard individually in most musical contexts. In this duo setting they have plenty of space to unfold. Rooted in contemporary jazz, the music branches out toward Viennese coffee house, program music, impressionism and folklore.
In their trio program, the two musicians invite the Israeli singer Efrat Alony into their band. Alony is professor for jazz voice in Bern and has released several highly appraised CDs with her own projects. Her warm and dark alto voice adds many colours to the duo setting. As a trio, the band explores new harmonic and structural possibilities; the musicians draw mutual inspiration from working with their original compositions, arranging ideas and improvisational concepts and create a new sound universe.
