With their TRIO SAINT TROPEZ, violin player Julia Czerniawska, baritone saxophone player Almut Schlichting and double bass player Sven Hinse dive into the world of French Jazz & Swing – from Django Reinhardt to Boris Vian. The resulting music is a surrealistic collage, Faux Latin grooves mixed with noise improvisations and chamber music miniatures, a multicultural melting pot between Paris, New York and Berlin.
The band moves effortlessly between the elegance of a string trio, the groove of a funk ensemble, and the freedom of open improvisation—an unconventional crossover.
This project was created as part of the Berlin concert series “Zugabe!!! Django Reinhardt and French Jazz”, supported by the Berlin Senate. After the first successful performance, the three musicians were so enthusiastic about the possibilities of the instrumentation and the repertoire that they decided to make it a “working band”. Since then, they have been exploring the possibilities of this unusual trio with inventiveness, wit and virtuosity.
